Local Elections 2009

Local Elections 2009!
Conservatives win control of Lancashire!
On Thursday 4th June everyone in Pendle had the chance to vote in the Lancashire County Council Elections and European Elections. What the papers said…

“The Conservatives were the big winners in Thursday's Lancashire County Council's elections. And no where was that success more exemplified than here in Pendle, where the party won four of the six divisions and picked up a seat from both the Liberal Democrats and Labour.”

“The biggest shock of the day came in West Craven, where Keith Bailey captured the seat for the Tories by defeating Liberal Democrat group leader County Coun. David Whipp with a majority of 435. And the Tories also picked up Pendle Central, where George Askew won with a majority of 68 votes over Liberal Democrat Dorothy Lord. The seat had previously been held by Labour county councillor Tim Ormrod, but he did not stand at the election and the party finished bottom of the poll. ”

“The Tories also successfully defended their seats in Pendle West and Pendle East, where County Couns Shelagh Derwent and Mike Calvert won with large majorities.”
(Nelson Leader, 11th June 2009)

Across the whole of Pendle the Parties polled:
Pendle Conservatives 10,885 (37%)
Labour 6,359 votes (22%)
Lib Dem 7,325 votes (25%)
BNP 4,116 (14%)
UKIP 892 (3%)
